Handling PDF Files

Many of the documents published on the Walter H. Drane website are in Adobe's Acrobat portable document format (*.pdf). To view or print these documents you will need the free Adobe's Acrobat Reader. Get Acrobat Reader

The Adobe Acrobat Reader is freeware software that can be downloaded from the Adobe website.

Acrobat Readers are available for various operating systems including Microsoft Windows, MS-DOS and Apple Macintosh systems. You can use the Acrobat Reader as a 'stand-alone' application, or integrate the reader with your Web Browser application.

"My Acrobat Reader is integrated with my Internet Browser"

Viewing PDF files

Use the left mouse button to select a PDF file. The document will open within your browser window, just like a regular web page. Depending on the actual size of Acrobat file, displaying the first page of the Acrobat file may take a little longer to open than you would normally expect from a regular web page (*.htm or *.html).
Saving PDF Files

To save a file using an integrated browser, you will need to follow a different approach than you may be accustomed to:

1.Use the right mouse button to select a PDF file.
2.From the pop-up menu, select 'Save Target As...'.
3.Select a disk drive and folder to store the Acrobat PDF file.
4.Click the 'Save' button.
PLEASE NOTE: Using the 'Save As...' option from the 'File' menu in your browser window will only save the HTML 'shell' in which the PDF file is displayed in your browser window: i.e. If you try to use the Acrobat Reader to (re-)open the files again, you will typically get an error message, similar to 'There was an error opening this document. A file read error has occurred'.

My Acrobat Reader is a stand-alone application

This is typically the case when you run the MS-DOS version of the Acrobat Reader

Viewing/Printing PDF Files

To view and/or print PDF files, you will need to:
  1. Use the left mouse button to select a PDF file.

  3. Start the Acrobat Reader.
  4. From the 'File' menu of the Acrobat Reader, click 'Open' to view the file.

To print the file, select 'Print' from the Acrobat Reader 'File' menu.
